House of the Dragon Review: Domesticating Game of Thrones The New York Times

But Daemon’s not necessarily someone whose presence you want to be in for very long. Even at his most devious, there is something appealing about Tyrion in the first episode that Daemon doesn’t yet have. And I’m not just saying that because the blond wig doesn’t quite go with Smith’s face.
A new teaser offers the first glimpse of the ancient Targaryens.
“The Blue Queen” is the steed of Prince Daeron Targaryen, a role that has yet to be cast in House of the Dragon. This she-dragon, who breathes blue flame, is said to be younger than Dreamfyre, Sunfyre, and Vhagar. This grey and white dragon is still relatively young during the Dance of Dragons, during which it bonds with Ser Laenor Velaryon (John Macmillan). Seasmoke appears during the climactic battle against the Crabfeeder in Season 1, Episode 3. As we wait for House of Dragons to premiere on August 21, 2022, there's plenty of time to rewatch the original Game of Thrones.

House of the Dragon review – this Game of Thrones prequel is gorgeous, opulent television
He was first ridden by Lady Laena Velaryon and then later by Aemond Targaryen. The drama about the House of Targaryen, set two centuries before the events in Game of Thrones, will premiere August 2022 on HBO. HBO officially announced on March 30 that the awaited dragon-centered Game of Thrones spin-off will premiere on August 21.
When will the rest of the episodes air?
Viserys decides that his daughter from his first marriage, Rhaenyra, should inherit the throne. The state of succession law in Westeros is fuzzy on this point, and the situation becomes contentious. The Targaryens keep a low profile and work on building their castle at Dragonstone. He and his sister-wives (yep, really), Rhaenys and Visenya, take a ride on their dragons and scout out all the kingdoms.

The first Game of Thrones episode makes it clear, in ways both subtle and grotesque, that women in Westeros are second-class citizens. When we meet young Arya for the first time, she’s forced to sew, because that’s what the other girls do. But within a few minutes, she proves that she can shoot a bow and arrow with more accuracy and skill than her brother Bran can, even though she’s banned from such pursuits. The first of many planned follow-ups to Game of Thrones, HBO’s House of the Dragon debuted Sunday looking an awful lot like Game of Thrones. Season 2 of House of the Dragon will continue to be based on George R. R. Martin’s novel Fire & Blood.

I personally liked the idea that the most obvious explanation was wrong and that the payoff would take some time... But the commentary from Tom Glynn-Carney and Ewan Mitchell seems to have debunked it. In an episode filled with intriguing figures, Peter Dinklage’s Tyrion stands out in Game of Thrones as a character of extra fascination. As a Lannister with what appears to be a lack of moral fiber — he drinks too much, sleeps around, and isn’t terribly careful with his words — Tyrion could be a villain. But he’s funny, articulate, and, as an outcast in his own family due to his stature, someone worthy of empathy. In other words, we’re not quite sure yet whether Tyrion is a good guy or a bad guy, but we know for a fact that he’s electric to watch because of the charisma Dinklage brings to the role.

His work on “Thrones” inspired a world tour, in which the composer performed music from the series live in 24 cities from 2017 to 2019. The 10-episode first season of “House of the Dragon” will debut on August 21 with weekly releases. While Season 2 of the “Thrones” prequel has not been officially confirmed, HBO and HBO Max chief Casey Bloys told Variety that “it’s probably a pretty good bet” that the network will order a second season of the show. “Generally speaking, we usually let something air and see how it does, but obviously, we’ll make preparations ahead of time to make sure we’re ahead of the game,” he said. The “Dance of the Dragons” is the civil war that ensued between the Targaryens.
And, finally, we’re ready to meet some House of the Dragon characters. Aemon’s oldest child is Princess Rhaenys (played by Eve Best in the series). Because Aemon was Jaehaerys’ eldest son, Rhaenys should be the obvious choice as heir. Unfortunately, all the lords in Westeros are super sexist and don’t like the idea of taking orders from a queen.
HBO has officially confirmed that it's working on a Game of Thrones prequel show revolving around the Targaryens, called House of the Dragon. Some of the more problematic aspects of “Thrones” have been reined in as well, probably at least in part because of the difference between premiering in 2011 and premiering in 2022. Sex and graphic violence are not as abundant in “House of the Dragon,” and they happen less as a matter of course; the nudity, especially, tends to be more stage managed and self-consciously tasteful, popping up like a diorama in a natural-history museum.
HBO’s per-episode expenditure on “House of the Dragon” was reportedly even greater than that of the final season of “Game of Thrones,” but you wouldn’t know it to look at the screen. Dragons are more abundant in this earlier time period, but they feel more obviously computer-generated and less terrifying (in review screeners, at least). Cityscapes and isolated castles feel less grand, battle scenes less vivid. This may reflect a conscious decision to refocus and make a story on a different scale, but the comparisons are inevitable and unfavorable. Even Ramin Djawadi’s opening theme music feels familiar but cut down to size, as if the “Game of Thrones” theme started skipping after a few bars. “House of the Dragon,” HBO’s heavily hyped spinoff series, is saddled with respectability.
The show is available on both HBO and HBO Max, which means we’re back to the good old days of a combined network/streaming air date and time. Sapochnik won the 2016 Primetime Emmy award for Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series for Game of Thrones episode “Battle of the Bastards” and shared the 2019 Outstanding Drama Series Emmy award with Martin, Gerardis, series creators David Benioff and D.B. While there are other Westeros-related series in development, “House of the Dragon” is the only confirmed “Game of Thrones” spinoff show (so far). “Flea Bottom” would focus on everyday citizens born in the poorest district of King’s Landing, and the idea of an animated series is also being floated around. Be sure to check back throughout the season as new information is revealed.

Will not time travel and can cite multiple TV shows to explain why. She does, however, want to believe that she can sneak references to The X-Files into daily conversation (and author bios). This is even more true after the ending of the episode, which I’ll address momentarily. There is no similar breakout in the first House of the Dragon installment.

No, Emilia Clarke will not be reprising her role as Daenerys Targaryen. As the show is set centuries before the events of Game of Thrones, her character doesn't make sense to be in the plot. House of the Dragon was created by GOT author George R.R. Martin and showrunners Ryan Condal (who created the sci-fi series Colony) and Miguel Sapochnik (a director on Game of Thrones). Rounding out the cast are Sonyo Mizuno, who will play Mysaria, Prince Daemon's lover, and Eve Best and Steve Toussaint, who will portray married royals Princess Rhaenys Velaryon (née Targaryen) and Lord Corlys Velaryon.
